Founded in 1991 and based in Brussels, the Danel Quartet is one of the most dynamic and forward-looking string quartets of today. Their repertoire is broadly based, with special strengths in Beethoven, French music, Soviet/Russian composers and the avant-garde.

Their performances have been broadcast on Bayerischer Rundfunk, BBC, NPS, Radio-France, RTBF, RSR, VRT-Klara, France-Musique, Hessischer Rundfunk, Norddeutscher Rundfunk, SWR, WDR. Festival appearances include Agora, Aldeburgh, Ars Musica, Badenweiler, Beethoven Fest, Evreux, Lisbon, Nijni-Novgorod, Milano Musica, Montpellier, Nantes, Round-Top Texas, van Vlaanderen, Wallonie, Schloss-Elmau, Heidelberg, Hamburg, Orlando, Traustein, Carintischer Sommer, The Pharos Trust and Kuhmo Chamber Festival as “Artists in residence”.

The Danel Quartet works in close cooperation with the great composers of our time such as Dusapin, Rihm, Volans, Lachenmann and Harvey, as well as talented young composers like Bosse, Bédrossian, Bacri, Breawaeys, Cassol, De Clerck, Defoort, d’Haene, Fafchamps, Honderdoes, Lampson, Mantovani, Mercier, Nelissen, Flender, Swinnen, Van der Harst, Vanhecke, Zhang, among others.

They have recorded works by Bacri, Biarent, De Clerck, Dusapin, Shostakovitch, Koering, Gounod, Goeyvaerts, Lambotte, Lampson, Mendelssohn, Mernier, Raskatov, Ronsenthal, Saygun, Souris, Swinnen, Weinberg, Zhang with different labels: Accord-Universal, Auvidis-Valois, Calliope, Col Legno, Cyprès, CPO, Fuga Libera, Megadisc and Triton. They are currently recording Weinberg's 17 String Quartets with WDR/CPO.

In 2006 the Danel Quartet took over from the Lindsay Quartet as quartet in residence at the University of Manchester, where they are involved in seminars, concerts serie, master-classes with partners as John Casken, composer, Bary Cooper, David Fallows and David Fanning, musicologists.

In 2005/2006 the Danel Quartet performed the Shostakovitch quartet cycle at the Concertgebouw Brugge, at the Brussels Royal Conservatoire, at the Opéra de Liège, in Manchester, Paris and Sapporo. To celebrate Helmut Lachenmann 70th birthday, in 2005 they performed the sensational Gran Torso at Konzerthaus Berlin, Theaterhaus Stuttgart and Villa Medicis Académie de France in Rome. In March 2006, Palais des Beaux-Arts Brussels and Ars Musica Festival invited them to perform Lachenmann's Tanzsuite mit Deutschlandlied for string quartet and orchestra with the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg conducted by Sylvain Cambreling.

The Danel Quartet is involved in master-classes and seminars for amateur players and young musicians with annual meetings and summer courses in France. They are supported by the Communauté Française de Belgique, CGRI and CulturesFrance.
